Loving Story Essay - 647 Words

The Loving Story The journey that Richard and Mildred Loving took is important for history and for the future of civil rights in the United States. I recently watched the documentary The Loving Story and enjoyed the footage, pictures, and interviews of everyone involved in the Loving v. Virginia case. The documentary addressed the issue of interracial marriage in Virginia in 1967. The married partners, Richard and Mildred, were woken up in the middle of the night and were criminally charged for being in the state of Virginia and being married. Richard was a white male, Mildred was a African American and Native American, and that was the problem that they faced at that point in history. The human face and cost is lost in the their eyes. The photos at the end showed how they were not different from a couple that was made up of two white or two black people. They were courageous and inspiring people in history and that is what they will be remembered for. Mildred and Richard Loving made it possible for people of two different races to get married in their case that made it to the Supreme Court. My reflections after viewing this film, moved towards thinking about our current situation of not allowing people of the LGBT community get married. The opinions and bigotry that are still instilled in our society. For those that say that we have moved past our prejudiced views as a society in the United States; I would say that they are wrong. How Should One Live - 914 Words

How should one live? This question has troubled philosophers for millennia, with many attempts to definitively answer this. This essay sets out to explore two of these perspectives; Aristotelian virtue ethics and Kantian duty ethics. Moral philosophy is to depict the absolute ideal (Sullivan, 1980), Aristotelian virtue ethics argues that a virtuous eudemonic life constitutes a moral one. Kant differs; morality is rational and the categorical imperative it to be abided by to live as such. Aristotle is the main proponent in the field of virtue ethics, culminating in the seminal work on the Subject; Nicomachean Ethics (NE). NE recognises a life well lived is a virtuous one, Eudemonia be-came the ultimate goal. Eudemonia is the culmination of an entire life lived well, in the pursuit of virtue and excellence (Taylor, 1955). Aristotle viewed ethics as a practical pursuit, the ends to the means is to achieve Eudemonia and not to possess the knowledge without action. As stated in NE; we are inquiring not in order to know what virtue is, but in order to become good, since otherwise our inquiry would have been of no use (Aristotle, 1996, p34, 1103b8-1104a4 Book Two, ii). Thus morality is a state produced by habitation; by doing â€Å"right† acts we then acquire the right moral character, are not born in a state of good moral character (Taylor, 1955). A Compromise Is Defined As An Agreement Or Settlement Of A...

A compromise is defined as an agreement or settlement of a dispute reached by two or more parties making concessions. The first amendment case law we reviewed in class seems to reflect a great deal of compromise, but not in a positive manner. It was troubling, paradoxical and even cruel. The rulings appeared to disregard ideals of human decency and yet, conversely, are said to set up a positive framework for future minority groups. In Hurley, LGBTQ discrimination is condoned under the guise of speaker autonomy. In Dale, LGBTQ exclusion is justified under expressive association. Both example the dangers of coming to a parley over human rights issues with a traditionalist, polarized group. That is to say, in making the weaker, singled out†¦show more content†¦Another counter argument may be Milton’s theory of the marketplace of ideas. That is to say â€Å"good† ideas usually dominate â€Å"bad† ones over time. This would support first amendment cases in th e sense that content should not be censored. Yet, it seems that this attitude leads to a social air of accepting LGBTQ discrimination under a theoretical guise without taking notice of the effects on the individual. Thus, I think there needs to be some aspect of an omniscient perspective that examines wether a decision further subjugates a historically battered group. Starting off with Hurley, first amendment protections were applied because parades were â€Å"public dramas of social relations† and could â€Å"carry subjects of communication and consideration†. I agree with this statement but find it vexing that the definition of expression has become so stretched that it overwhelms the issue at hand in order to suit the defendant’s claim. I see it as nothing more than a clever way to grant more basis and protections by making it an issue of free speech and therefore, of speaker autonomy. That is to say, negating an overarching perspective on impact, the courtâ €™s compliance with the exclusion of minority groups to follow a â€Å"central coherency† really seems to contradict previous cases like United States v. Virginia. It is merely because Virginia is an issue of sex based equal protection and the other two are first amendment rights issues that the resultShow MoreRelatedMediation Is A Type Of Alternative Dispute Resolution1365 Words   |  6 PagesMediation is a type of alternative dispute resolution that gives the two disputing parties a third party to help them discuss and revise their points of conflict.
